Welcome to Peak Refractions! I'm Helen and I'm obsessed with stained glass!
I’ve always been mesmerised by the refraction of light through stained glass. It reminds me of swimming through rippling water. And I've always been a bit crafty on the side, despite being a pharmacist for the past 25 years. But mid-life brings a fresh perspective to what you want from life and following a day-course and a series of serendipitous events, I decided to take the plunge and start my stained glass business.
I design and make unique, delicate, stained glass flower stems, and love creating new pieces inspired by flowers or foliage I spot when out walking or running. And I relish the challenge of designing special requests! I use the copper foil technique, scrap glass and delicate wires to create my stems, and get great pleasure from turning tiny pieces of scrap into something beautiful and lasting to bring people pleasure.
I also design and make landscapes inspired by the natural beauty of the Peak District right on my doorstep. I love to create bespoke pieces that capture a favourite or special view that can be kept in a window forever. I use wire work and tiny glass beads to add detail to my pieces. I love the way that glass landscapes change in colour and mood depending on the light, mirroring the effects of sun and season on the real-life landscape.
I work from my little glass studio (aka kitchen/lounge/garden/garage) in Sheffield, typically accompanied by scruffy dog Switch.
