My dressmaking business started with my children.
When my sons were little, I made them a wee pair of trousers and a knitted hat when they were babies, and dress-up outfits for school. And when my daughter was born I made her a dress, which turned into an extra special dress made from fabric I'd saved from my bridesmaid dresses - more on that in a separate post.
From there I really wanted to learn how to draft my own patterns and bring my ideas into reality, so I took an online course before enrolling in a sewing machinist apprenticeship with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust a year later where I cut my teeth learning how to make a variety of healthcare clothing and accessories such as Surgical gowns, scrubs and hats, gaining experience working on the cutting table right the way through to producing the final garment.
At Julia & Us Clothing I specialise in making dresses for women and girls as well as matching ties for the boys for extra special family outfits.
I use deadstock fabric for my clothes. This is fabric that has been left over from designers/high street brands. By choosing to use only deadstock fabric, I am saving them from landfill and making something unique for you!
