Hello, lovely people. I'm Jo, a Woodturner, Artisan, and a Proud Yorkshire Lass.
MY SHOP
My shop is 'Art for Wellness Studio', where I make my Handmade Decorative Wooden Bowls. I slowly and surely took over the garage. My small Grandchildren love it and often help (not sure that is the correct word for it). They call it our happy place.
ME, THE CHILD
I’ve always made things, drawn and painted for as long as I can remember. Even as a tiny kid (still tiny now—5ft and proud!), I had my little toolset and followed my dad everywhere. He was a Brickie who could turn his hands to anything, from painting to puttying windows (Dad said I could add a bit of spit into it to soften it… highly frowned upon for a child, unless you were “working” lol!).
MEMORIES
Dad helped build the houses where we lived as kids and where my Studio is based. I can still smell the red diesel from the dumper truck rides we had.
ME, THE ADULT
My journey hasn’t been without bumps. I’ve worked in road safety since 2019 as a self-employed Driving Instructor. Even though I'm only 5ft, I can drive trucks, coaches, and dustbin wagons if and when required.
I also worked with the local council's road safety initiatives for a few years. After facing a difficult and unsupportive environment, I had to take time out due to stress and anxiety.
MY FAVOURITE THOUGHTFUL XMAS PRESSY
One Christmas, my Hubby surprised me with a Lathe (I thought it was a running machine. I was not a happy bunny.) This, however, reignited my creative fire that I’d put aside while raising our children.
MY INSPIRATION
Whilst I was recovering from stress, I found learning to use a lathe and the techniques of woodturning with Uncle Roger filled me with joy.
Inspired by my husband's thoughtful gift, my Dad, Uncle Roger, and a life’s worth of grit and determination, every creation is made with love and mindfulness.
NEW SKILLS
Today, I have learned to turn my anxieties into Unique Woodturned Bowls. I have learned to embellish these Unique Wooden Bowls with:- pyrography, carving, inks, watercolours, pencils, acrylics, sand, pebbles, you name it- I'll do it. Often, I have a design in my head, but the piece takes on a life of its own.
ME, NOW
Now, full circle, I’m back living just around the corner from where it all began, (I can still see our old house from our window) I'm creating again from my workshop surrounded by the smell of wood and shaving all around me, thanks to my lovely husband Paul (we’ve been best friends since I was 15)
My hobby of creating unusual gifts for men (manly ones obviously) and unusual gifts for her is a very important part of my life. It helps to ground me and improves my health and well-being.
FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD
I love being at home, it's my favourite place. Spending time with my best mate and surrounded by our lovely whippets, Eric and Ernie.
Creating something from nature and turning it into meaningful art for others brings me pure joy.
From a branch to an exquisite piece of art
If you have an idea you’d love me to explore, I’m all ears.
Love, Jo
