I design and make beautiful fused glass pieces in my small home studio. Each item is individually designed, with most pieces using at least two layers of glass. The glass is cut by hand, fused in the kiln at around 800 °C and then slowly cooled. This process takes around 18 hours until the glass is cool enough to handle and results in a flat tile - either a jewellery pendant, a piece of wall art, or a flat platter. To achieve a shaped piece, such as a bowl, the tile is usually then reheated over a mould at a slightly lower temperature to either 'slump' or 'drape' it into the desired form.
Glass can behave unexpectedly and colours can change during the heating process, so it's always a thrill to open the kiln and see how each item has turned out - and requires a great deal of patience during the long cooling period to resist taking a peek !
