In 2016, at the age of 51, I left Birmingham City University with an honours degree in Horology. This is the only place in the world offering such a qualification. Not only did I learn the skills to repair and make both clocks and watches but I was also exposed to various jewellery making techniques. The course gave me the opportunity to experience both modern technology and traditional skills. Combining this with my previous experience in IT has enabled me to take a unique approach to the design and manufacture of my items. I combine the latest technology with traditional craft skills to create items which I hope others will also appreciate.
I like to use materials I have collected over the years or repurpose items which would otherwise just be left gathering dust. At the moment I am working my way through Jeweller clearance watches and turning them into something more pleasing. This means stripping them to their component parts and making better watches from them and adding artistic dials which makes them really stand out. None of this mass produced bulk printed stuff, each one is assembled by hand and then hand finished to the best standard possible.
On the jewellery front I have a large quantity of tagua pieces and nuts that I am making into various items including pendants, brooches and earrings. It is nice to work with an ivory alternative which has so many benefits and not just for the elephants. I recommend looking up tagua nuts as they are a very interesting and sustainable resource. Despite being known as nuts they are in fact a seed so should not pose a problem for people with nut allergies.
