I create and self-publish small picture books where the storytelling is woven between the text and the illustrations. Grand-mothers walk alongside children and angels, with a little sprinkle of magic.
Until a few years ago, I used oils, line drawings and watercolors ("Our Garden Cat" book). With MS that causes hand tremor, I am now using cut-paper collage, a wonderfully (more shaky hands-friendly!) creative material, with a variety of prepared papers with Gelli printing, cyanotypes, stamps and watercolors, sometimes embellished with stitching.
Having worked as a nurse for several years, the caring aspect of human interactions is very important for me. Subjects such as death and bereavement are still considered taboo in Western society. Picture books are a gentle and caring tool to invite a dialogue between the generations, when an adult may read the book to a young child.
Likewise, social and environmental issues such as pollution of the sea are special subjects for picture books too.
