Welcome to Folly Flora located in Brooke, a hamlet in rural Rutland, the UK's smallest county.
What I make and offer for sale -
I have accumulated a vast 'stash' of fabrics, yarns, trims and embellishments in a multitude of colours and textures over the years from which I make my items. Including hand stitched or machine sewn accessories to wear - bags, scarves, necklaces, brooches.
Also decorative and functional items for the home - tea and coffee cosies, sewing accessories, wreaths and decorations.
Plus a range of craft supplies - creative threads, yarns, fibres, handmade papers, textiles, trimmings and 'inspiration packs' in a multitude of colours and textures for your projects or top up your own 'stash'!
Folly Flora's own 'Make It' sewing, needlework, tassel, garland, wreath and weaving kits for adults.
All items designed by me, hand stitched, crafted or machine sewn, gathered and assembled in a smoke and now sadly pet free environment.
Where do I work -
My workroom looks out onto the garden with views of my lovely trees and the countryside beyond. The image shows menacing but beautiful stormy skies over Brooke.
How did I start and inspiration -
From a young age I have loved needlework, sewing and painting. At primary school we had a lovely genteel head teacher who taught us needlework and sewing. We started by making a needlebook which I still have and use. We then learnt to embroider simple canvas samplers, made and embroidered an apron, skirt and frilly petticoat under her watchful eye. My Gran was an accomplished needlewoman in tapestry counted thread work on linen. Gran taught me quilting and patchwork, starting with hexagon piecing using the loose tea boxes as templates. Gran was a real inspiration for me and gave much time and encouragement and made me my first sewing basket which I still love and use. I used her hand turned Singer sewing machine initially eventually graduating to my own electric one.
Over the years I have never been without ongoing craft projects inside the home and outside. I have tried many and varied crafts, willow weaving, pottery and mosaics. I find I have far too many ideas and projects in my head and on paper with too little time to pursue all of them!
Sustainability -
I salvage and hoard vintage fabrics, curtains, clothing, lace and table linens, mainly inherited from family which I then use in many designs of bags and accessories.
For presenting and protecting items I am still using up my existing stock of polythene/cellophane bags and cellophane wrapping. When I eventually need to replenish stocks I will revert to paper based products where applicable,
All my yarn cones are saved and used for making angels, Christmas 'tree' decorations and mosaic bases.
I recycle clean outer packaging materials and bubble wrap, which I use for packing my items to post.
Tissue and wrapping paper are saved and used for making wreath bases, textured collage work and paper beads.
The future -
Eventually I plan to hand over my vast 'stash' of fabrics, threads and craft supplies to my daughter-in-law Abigail, whose creative flair constantly inspires me. I know my hoard of cherished goodies will be in safe hands.
