I'm Julia, the maker behind Draped in Lace, spinning my own yarns and sourcing high-quality vintage yarns to be able to knit and crochet beautiful lace-patterned accessories for you and your home from the comfort of my home in the West Midlands, just 300m from the border with Warwickshire.
I was brought up in an inner-city area of south-east Birmingham, moving out to the leafier suburbs as a teenager. With limited outdoor play options, my left-handed mother helped me, a right-hander, to learn to knit at the tender age of six. I taught myself to crochet a few years later.
From leaving school at 16 until my early 30s, I worked in offices as an admin/secretary/P.A., all the time cultivating my passion for the craft, making toys and other treasures. I opened my first online shop when I was in my mid-30s and a stay-at-home mom. I made hats, scarves and tea cosies, gaining enough recognition to be contacted by a TV advertisement company to make several tea cosies for their offices and also by a drinks company to make tea cosies in specific colours and patterns for the launch of a range of teas at a trade fair.
I began teaching both of my children to knit when they were around six years old, passing on my skills and creating a beautiful legacy that continues to bring us closer together. They are now in their late teens and early twenties, still learning, as I am.
I changed direction and opened Draped in Lace around 2015, after learning to spin my own yarns and deciding that I needed to make more luxurious items for the luxurious fibres that I was spinning. I love the complexity and mental challenge of knitting lace.
I am committed to using natural and eco-friendly materials as much as possible and enjoy supporting sheep farmers. I often leave my yarns in the sheep's natural colour or blend them to make new natural colours. If I dye them, I use eco-friendly, non-metallic dyes. I also appreciate the value of high-quality vintage yarns, which are often disregarded and tossed aside yet carry immense potential, character, and a history of our ever-changing fibre fashions.
One of my proudest moments to date is when one of my shawls became part of a costume for the famous U.S. actress Kecia Lewis on the stage of a New York theatre. Please take a look at the photo above.
Everything I do, I do by hand to as high a standard as I possibly can, and I am very proud of what I do.
I invite you to visit my blog, where you can find photographs and valuable information about my creations.
