My Mum was a knitter so I tried to learn and I grew up loving yarn but never seemed to progress beyond making a scarf. Listening to the radio one day, I heard about a charity that provides Octopuses, crocheted by volunteers, for premature babies. I went straight to their website, read about how they have to be made to very specific requirements and also saw photos of the tiny babies holding on to the tentacles which replicate the umbilical cord and sooth them. I decided there and then I would become a volunteer and learn to make them. I struggled at first but then it started to fall into place and over the next few years I made over 150 of them, each one carefully checked by my coordinator and, if standards were met, packed and delivered to our local neonatal unit. If anyone in our house is ill we cannot make the octopuses but I found I couldn't be without yarn on my hook, so I began to make other items too. Before long I was making shawls and mittens, hats and toys. I find crochet incredibly soothing and the yarn colours and textures delight me. I love gifting things I have made but my yarn cupboard is overflowing and the grandchildren only need so many jumpers so I decided to share the pleasure. My garment's are colourful and often quirky but always made with calmness in every stitch. As each garment is hand made there may be small irregularities but they simply add to the originality of the item. I hope the buyers and wearers enjoy my items as much as I do.
